    Job Summary


    A “hands on” Manager who provides leadership, guidance, employee accident investigation, safety training, and safety auditing and is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of Safety and Health policies, procedures and programs as well as oversee facility safety personnel.  Oversight for safety practices, accident and workers’ compensation claims investigations, accident reporting procedures, OSHA compliance and Regulatory monitoring, record keeping and reporting processes to effectively reduce risk, increase safety awareness, and manage costs, while optimizing productivity.  In addition, the position is responsible for providing data, reporting and presenting information to the Vice President of HR, Vice President of Operations, and to the Johanna Foods, Inc. Safety Committee.  The position will report to and work closely with Human Resources, but will have substantial interface with Operations in improving the safety program including training and change management to enhance a culture of safety awareness, participating in the hiring process, new employee orientation and employee coaching, discipline and counseling issues pertaining to safety practices.


    • Participate in the development of safety and health policies, practices and procedures throughout the network of Flemington Plants in compliance with governmental regulations including Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations, including, but not limited to OSHA
    • Assist in developing Company safety and health procedures and programs.
    • Assist in developing and implementing Company safety and health programs, which may include periodic updates of practices and policies
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary group and be a team leader
    • Monitor new legislation as it relates to safety and health standards and practices and facilitate changes, as necessary
    • Lead the development of and provide guidance to location safety personnel regarding facility specific issues relative to safety and health programs and practices
    • Identify, investigate, report and provide guidance relative to root causes for incidents, employee safety programs, regulatory compliance relative to safety and health
    • Participate in the development of materials necessary for a comprehensive employee and supervisor safety training program, including training modules designed to meet or exceed the safety goals of the organization
    • Develop and implement solutions for emergency preparedness plans for Company sites
    • Monitor and analyze safety trends and implement programs designed to improve Company results
    • Implement standards of performance, benchmarks and key performance indicators that allow accurate measurement of performance and improvement.
    • Assist in the development of consistent pre-employment practices
    • Provide leadership, guidance and technical support to operations management and safety committees
    • Act as a contact for state regulatory agencies regarding matters involving safety and health
    • Assist in the development and administration of Company safety incentive programs, including the evaluation of the effectiveness of such programs in positively changing employee behavior
    • Assist in ensuring consistency in the policies and practices being employed at each Flemington facility, where practical
    • Other projects and responsibilities as may be assigned
    • Ensure compliance with applicable quality system standards and the unit’s food safety and security programs in support of essential manufacturing strategies and practices.
    • Serves as Alternate to Manager, Employee Relations to ensure effective coverage to the Safe Quality Food responsibilities pertaining to that position.


    Knowledge and Skills


    • Bilingual in Spanish strongly preferred
    • Excellent leadership, change management and team building skills
    • Excellent working knowledge of Federal regulations and various State laws regarding safety and health compliance
    • Multiple locations experience a plus
    • Proficient in personal computer software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook
    • Knowledge and a minimum of five years experience in training in a group environment
    • Attention to detail in composing, typing and proofing materials, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines
    • Ability to maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality and sensitive information
    • Ability to build an effective team, develop and maintain positive working relationships and articulate objectives
    • Excellent spelling, grammar and written communication skills
    • Strong ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines
    • Detail oriented with excellent organization skills


    Education and Experience


    • Minimum of five years safety management and leadership experience
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in safety and health or a related discipline preferred
    • Knowledge of Manufacturing environment
    • Outstanding working knowledge of principles and practices of Safety and Health


    Working Conditions


    • Able to work in heat and cold conditions, in, upon, and around heavy machinery and equipment and an office environment
